Nutmeg essential oil is extracted from the seeds of the Myristica Fragrans tree, native to Indonesia, but also often produced in India. Nutmeg is most commonly known for its use in cookery but also has a strong presence in aromatherapy. Nutmeg has a powerful, spicy aroma, and blends well with other spice scents. Nutmeg essential oil contains Limonene which has mood-boosting qualities and citronellol which is known to repel insects.
Nutmeg should be used with care as in high concentrations it can be intoxicating and can be toxic. Always ensure that Nutmeg is diluted before use. Consult with a midwife or doctor before use during pregnancy.
Nutmeg can be diluted with carrier oils and used in homemade massage oils. Dilutions of Nutmeg essential oil can also be used directly onto the skin or in the bath. Add a few drops of Nutmeg essential oil to a diffuser for a spicy top note to your blend, but only a small amount will be required.
